Fall DIY Projects

Lumber prices have finally gone down and with the end of summer coming soon, it’s the perfect time for some DIY projects! At Larry’s Lumber, we have everything you need for anything home improvement that inspires your creativity. Looking for ideas?

Wall Decor

Wood is a timeless medium that can add flair to any room, but it’s not just for picture frames. Use wood to make shadow boxes – square ‘shelves’ that allow for two levels of displaying clocks, small vases, potted plants like succulents, and more. You can also put a spin on the traditional square light boxes with other shapes like triangles, which are easy for a beginner woodworker and DIYer.

Looking for something a little more functional? Why not brave a wood and leather shelf? Install simple hooks on your wall and with matching leather strips and a sturdy piece of sanded 2×4, lace through the leather loops against the wall.

Furniture

Building furniture is a lot easier than you think. You’ll only need a saw, hammer, and some nails (although dependable power tools make life easier) to make simple furniture that’s basically IKEA assembly but with extra steps. For this rustic outdoor accent table, buy one 96” 2×2 board, one 72” 2×2 board, and 16 2.5” pocket hole screws. With a drill, saw, clamps, a sander, and some paver stones for your tabletop you’ll finish a weekend project that will last you year around no matter how wet it gets, just make sure to seal the wood to prevent rot.

If you’re looking for something a little more utilitarian, we suggest this simple Hoosier style step-stool that’s also a bar stool! Easy to make with a handful of two-by-fours and some TLC. A step-stool is always handy to have around and when you’re ready to hit the hay after your weekend project, line up another project for the following weekend with a brand new upgraded bed frame and headboard. Depending on your choice of style there may be significant differences in material requirements. A platform bed doesn’t require the extra work of traditional bed frame with bed posts, so plan accordingly. Once you’ve finished the frame? It’s time to style your room with an attention catching headboard. The options are limitless and easy with lumber – be it geometric wood detailing using a miter saw, unique shingles, reclaimed driftwood and recycled materials, or simple plywood for that Icelandic minimalist look.
