Our Company History
About Larry's Lumber & Supply, Inc.

In June 1988, Larry Reichart decided to open his own lumber business, Larry’s Lumber & Supply, Inc. His father had a sawmill, and later worked in a lumberyard for 16 years. With this experience, he started from scratch to begin his independent lumber business.

He ran the operation for the first two years at a small location in the back of Columbia County’s office building. Larry’s Lumber & Supply moved to its current Buckhorn location in 1990.

Throughout the years, Larry has seen constant growth in the area. Although many of the large store chains have moved in, Larry’s Lumber continues to be the preferred lumber yard and hardware store to members of the local community because of their expert knowledge in lumber wood materials, construction products, and hardware needs.

What is the difference between pressure-treated lumber and untreated lumber?

Pressure-treated lumber contains preservatives that help protect wood against fungal decay and certain insects. It is commonly used for decks, fences, and other outdoor structures exposed to moisture. Untreated lumber does not have this added protection and is generally better suited for dry, protected applications unless the wood species has suitable natural durability. Pressure-treated lumber is available in different treatment categories, so material rated for above-ground use should not automatically be used in ground contact.

Which type of lumber is best for outdoor construction projects in Pennsylvania?

The best choice depends on whether the wood will be exposed to rain, snow, ground moisture, or direct sunlight. Pressure-treated lumber is commonly used for deck framing, fences, and other exterior structures. Naturally durable species such as cedar may be suitable for certain applications, while composite products are another option for decking surfaces. Pennsylvania’s freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal moisture make proper material selection important. Always match the lumber’s treatment rating and structural grade to its intended use.
